There is no one like Buck Brannaman. "The Faraway Horses" tells you his life story. "Believe" explains how much he has helped people through working with their horses. The documentary DVD "Buck" pretty much morphs the two books visually. I recommend them all but please realize these are not training books or video. Get the 7 Clinics DVD's for how-to training. 7 Clinics with Buck Brannaman: Complete Set 1-7 or his "Making of a Bridle Horse" series which are fabulous. Buck needs to be seen in person to fully appreciate who he is and how different his approach from any other living horseman. A quiet and humble man who loves horses at the deepest level. Those who embrace his teachings are forever changed.
Okay, I rarely, rarely...lets just say never, become obsessed with a book and it's author! But here I am wildly nuts about this writer and his fabulous way of relating to horses and really to all of life, humans included. If you haven't heard of Buck Brannaman, I forgive you. Go on youtube and check out some of his videos. Take a look at the documentary, "Buck" on Netflex to get a good idea of what's going on here. This guy is so authentic it brings me to tears. I have learned more from this book than any class I've ever taken. I plan to schedule a trip to one of his clinics..yeah, it's a clinic for horses, not people, I'll just be an observer, but I would pay just about any price to see this guy in action. Where does his power of observation come from? Evidently, from a great deal of personal hardship and the courage to make the right choices in the face of such abuse.Thank you Buck for one of the greatest books ever. We owe you big time.
As an equine owner, rider and horse enthusiast, I love reading anything about horses. I’ve been to Buck’s clinics and saw the documentary about him. This was nice to read from his perspective and to learn more about him. I could hear him speaking in some of the phrasing. I loved this and particularly enjoyed the photos.
Buck Brannaman is a true master--I started to say "American" master, but his humanity transcends nationality. He is a gift in my life, a translator of the divine language that can come through the horse if you can learn to hear it. Buck's message, and the message of the horse, as Buck relays it, is not just about what we usually think of as "horsemanship." More than that, it's a tutorial for inhabiting the planet in a kinder, gentler, more hopeful, more vital way, about letting the horse teach us how to be a better human. To the extent that the creative force of the Universe has something "in mind," this must be it. In these pages I find a much more sacred endeavor than using the horse as humanity historically has. Buck Brannaman, to me, is an alchemist if ever there was one. How does one transform the pain and tragedy of life into fulfillment and contribution? Read "The Faraway Horses" and see what you think.
I would give this book and its contents a 10 STAR rating. What Buck has done revolutionized horse training and mankind's understanding of the mind and personality of horses. His own background of abuse helped him see the same things being done to terrorize and abuse animals/horses. His work and kindness to horses developed an understanding and trust between beasts and their owners that is of tremendous importance to all who work with horses or who love to see and appreciate their beauty.While working with horses, he learned how to work with different personalities of people and how to treat his fellowman/woman as well. Well done Buck. Your life's work is invaluable and will last for centuries.P.S. I am not a horse owner nor a particularly great horse lover. I just loved how he came to understand and treat horses. He is a humanitarian.
If you have no concept of common sense, or right from wrong, you probably won't like this book. Because Mr. Brannaman is a master of common sense, has a clear and ready moral compass that he actually uses, and possesses another quality sorely missing in vast portions of today's society -- integrity -- his books are entertaining while being educational. (The educational part gets slipped in -- no memorization required or sermons given.) I discovered Buck Brannaman when my sister drug me to a movie I'd never heard of called "Buck." I was instantly hooked on all things Brannaman. I'd love to someday be able to attend one of his clinics, even though I don't own horses. We had horses when I was a kid, and I've always had a soft spot for critters of all kinds, but Buck Brannaman's affinity with horses translates to an affinity with all critters, be they 4-legged or 2. A very satisfying read.
This autobiography mixed with a little of his teaching philosophy is just exceptional. Now, it helps if you have seen "The Horse Whisperer" and more importantly the recently released documentary "Buck". Irrespective, as a standalone this book gives you background into the mind of Buck. Surviving physical torment from his father after an early death of his Mother, Buck describes this period in vivid detail followed by the rescue by his foster parents. Still, at 18 he is a man and strikes out on his own: not really the life of most people today who still have a home to return to.What this book does that the documentary "Buck" does not do is fill in the missing pieces of his personal life including his first marriage and a tragedy in his early life. While not covered in great detail there is a very good chapter on meeting his current wife.Buck may be controversial to some but this book demonstrates what a gentle soul he really is which bleeds over into his unique horse training. You can't read this book without coming away impressed with the character of the man. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in an interesting read. I have no interest in horses but found this documentary fascinating and this is worth the read to complete the story.
