My Siplings and Myself lost our Mother in 2008. This disease was progressing to the point of her forgetting that she had just repeated herself for the fifth time. I felt more like her mother than her daughter. One afternoon during the spring my Dear Mom seemed to have tripped on her feet and fell. I had made sure nothing was broken and was able to get her back on her feet. As I was helping her change out of her wet clothes, I noticed a big bruse forming on her right hip so I rushed to the hosital. Mom had not tripped she had a stroke, she was still able to look at me and talk to me. The hospital had rules against over night visitors eve in ICU so I was forced to leave my crying scared morher in the hands of strangers. That was the last time my mother able to move on her own. After the doctors inforemed us how sever the damage was. I honored Mom's wish and put a DNR order on her. To this day I have wonder if I had given up to soon. Finally after reading your book I realize Mom would not have wanted it any other way. She died before she had to suffer all the cruelties of this hideous disease. Thank-You for finally putting my mind to rest as I felt like you were writnig this book about Mom and Myself. It was very easy to slip into the character's place.

This is a different story from others I’ve read; not a murder mystery, thriller, love story, or any other category I can think of.It’s an honest look at a woman who thinks a lot. She’s caring, she’s funny, she has some weird thoughts on some odd topics — all while caring for her elderly mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s.Jeanne is an ordinary, overworked, and yet loving daughter. She has no life of her own and it seems no one really understands her plight. She ponders her plight like someone who’s planning a trip way down the road, although not sure of her destination. No matter what happens to her, she doesn’t get overly emotional and can find humor in just about everything. Don’t misunderstand; this isn’t a simple comedy. She's a woman who has, on occasion, been frustrated enough to yell at her mother, but then turn and comfort her. What makes this a great book is the witty spontaneous humor that pops up. There have been places where I was laughing so hard I had to stop reading for a minute.I don’t write many reviews, so this may not be the best description. You’d have to read it for yourself to really appreciate the heroine who doesn’t see herself in that light.

Harper's writing style is intriguing. She writes from the head, not the heart, and tells it as it is from her head, and takes the chance of getting her protagonist, Jeanne, from getting a beating if caught by the receiver. Jeanne's internal dialogue is a lot of fun to listen to, and stops her from getting in more trouble. She is sharp and witty, that's probably why not. She is respected for that. However, she has a lot of baggage to deal with, a beautiful and charming mother, a strong and loving father figure, parents who adore each other and have the perfect marriage, and a brother who grows to try to emulate that marriage as, Jeanne Buchannon, does.Yet, Jeanne is not physically nor socially able to measure up to her mother. As any of us who grew up in such a household know, you can never fulfill the expectations or find that perfect deal; you are doomed. Somehow, one falls deeply in love with the other partner and is betrayed or battered, or there is a lack of emotion.Harper hits it right on the head both times with her characters. It doesn't matter where the story takes place, but in this incident, it is perfect that Auletta, Louisianna, is dismal and remote, close enough to the French Quarter but far enough not to be involved or affected by its' revelry. Jeanne's reprieve, at times, is New York City, for a brief marriage to a college friend, a good relationship with his family, and the birth of her son, Rad. Sometimes, even New York City can be lonely and one can be forgotten even there, and terrible things happen, and it does to Jeanne, with a surprising twist. After her inevitable divorce, she still lives in the city, but circumstances force her back to Auletta, and a difficult situation with her mother's condition, Alzheimer's disease. Ergo, The Worst Day of My Life, So Far...which could be her mantra from the beginning of her life as it worsens. Ms. Harper deals with Jeanne's situation as if she was Jeanne herself. I know, because I am in this situation, albeit with much more help. I feel Jeanne's pain and her sense of loneliness, abandonment and lack of foresight combined with love for her mother. It is a dilemma. I only wish there was a better solution.
