Okay, there are two versions of these books on Amazon. One is the light novel, the other is the manga, but the manga isn't listed when you search for it.In order to view and purchase the manga instead of the light novel, you need to click the arrow that says "See all formats and editions" and then click on the paperback formats. One of those paperbacks will be the manga. It'll have a different cover and say "The Manga Companion" in the title.The first 3 volumes of the manga are listed this way along with the light novels. I don't know why they have it set up like that, but you can totally buy the manga on Amazon too.By the way, I buy both the manga and novels. The novels go into a lot more detail, and the manga has some really nice artwork.
UPDATE: So Amazon sent me a replacement copy and it is exactly the same screwed up copy, so it looks like the entire print run is bad. The publisher and Amazon should look into this and track down all the bad copies before they are shipped to customers.I would love to review the book's contents, but I can't. This instead is a review aimed at the publisher, because I definitely have the product and it is certainly screwed up.I received a copy of what claims to be Shield Hero Vol 2 that was clearly messed up, the cover art didn't fill the whole page (you can even see the cutting guides for properly presenting the cover and a wide white margin), the book was not as thick as volume one (this book is only 239 pages compared to the claimed 300), and had larger size pages. The interior of the book wasn't Shield Hero Vol 2 at all. It was instead a student coaching guide book called "The Growth Mindset Coach by Annie Brock and Heather Hundley", The Growth Mindset Coach: A Teacher's Month-by-Month Handbook for Empowering Students to Achieve which I'm sure is a wonderful book if you are actually looking to get a student coaching guide book and a not a fantasy themed Japanese light novel.I can only assumed someone seriously screwed up an entire print run at the publisher and then completely failed to notice the books weren't right before shipping them out, or that this book was POD and they screwed it up. This shouldn't have happened, there's no way this book looks correct. This should have been caught at multiple points before it reached me, even the Amazon employee who packaged it should have realized it was wrong. I've included two pictures because this was a weird one, I've had missing pages before, and damaged pages, and faint pages, I've never had the completely wrong book in a really obviously wrong cover.Fortunately it looks like Amazon will let me return it for a new copy, at the minor inconvenience of having to run to the local UPS to drop it off. Maybe if the next copy is correct I'll review the actual contents of Shield Hero Vol 2.
I read a lot of trashy isekai novels so I set the bar pretty low when it comes to having any expectations here. While the first book seemed pretty rough, I thought it might at least improve once the writer found his groove. However, it somehow has gotten even worse. Repetitive descriptions, bland language, cringy behaviors all around, there isn't much to like.Just read this description of a race that occurs early on:***Kind of spoilers below***It was like a motorcycle versus a motorized bicycle. Naturally, Filo was the motorcycle in this case whereas Motoyasu was stuck with a motorized bycle. That's how much faster we were.Filo shouted in joy, as if to show off how confident we were with our lead. It was like being on a motorcycle.Again, I have very low standards when it comes to this genre. I just want something simple but enjoyable to burn through. This series is just plain lazy with few, if any, redeeming qualities to be said of it. I honestly don't understand how anyone could justify greater than 3 stars for this title, much less the 4.5+ it is averaging over 120 reviews. Complete waste of money, avoid.
I love this series and the fact its the light novel version. The reason is because of the fact that there more detail as the manga glosses over alot of situations or skips some all together. If the manga is important try a manga reader app, but I strongly advise buying the light novels too so you get the full story. I have read both and can safely say they compliment each other. If you only want one version, then go with this one. Thanks for your time and hope I helped out.
While the writing of the first volume is far from perfect, you can mostly forgive it due to the enteraining nature of the story. However, volume 2 jumps you right into an immediate back sliding of the characters, for me taking away much of the power of the rather nice ending to volume 1. We also introduce a new party member - this is pretty expected given the described nature of this world - but of course we end up it being a her, and replacing Raphtalia as the designated loli.The events continue to make you question the exact mechanics of the world; as it becomes more and more game like due to the super short travel times. The spacing of the waves at one month across continues to feel like a mechanism to force a super quick set of actions and allow the story to avoid much character development.
