I paraphrase Gandhi's famous quote. If that isn't an indictment of modern Christianity, I don't know what is!This is a wonderful, inspiring, challenging and frightening book, but like previous reviewer Rebel Girl says in her critical review, it's not perfect, and it could have used some editing and fact-checking. But I still give it five stars because, for one thing, there are precious few books like this. For another, this gives us the personal stories of people who have actually decided to follow Christ with everything they've got. How rare is that?We have millions of Christians in this country who call themselves Christians and who pray and go to church and are 'good', but there are so few of us who have the guts and commitment to actually live our faith. To put ourselves on the line. To take a stand which might endanger us or alienate us from our own families and friends. Yes, the people profiled in this book are rabble-rousers, radicals, rebels and dangerous to the status quo. I admire them. I wish I had a fraction of their courage. I find their stories inspirational and hopeful.I would hazard a guess that many of the people in this book would not be voting for the GOP. But that is only my opinion.
Very inspirational for people of faith who do not often see models of Christian faith lived out through social activism. Useful. For social progressive activists to see examples of people of faith join in common cause to make our society and the world a better place.
I have been enjoying reading this much over-looked personal history of conversion and witness. I find the author's writing highly engaging -- lots of information, insight, combined with a focus and an energy that is wonderful. As a Plowhares activist who is briefly mentioned in this book, I was delighted to see so many familiar names. However, I'm learning there are many facets of the lives of other activists that I really knew nothing about. I have been enormously impressed reading the life of Roy Bourgeois, a friend since 1976, but with whom I have never had the chance to learn all the depth and breadth of his exceptional conversion and courage. And now, for speaking out for equality for women, Father Roy -- one of the few Catholic priests who amounts to anything -- is cast out. I hope this great book is read widely to awaken people to how damaging it is to have Caiphas lording over all the Scribes and Pharasees worldwide in the Catholic Church, conspiring against Christ once again.

Mine is a militant brand of atheism. Richard Dawkins is my favorite and I am quick to rise to the debate when religion gets involved. This book was so difficult for me because it riveted me with accounts of religious activists that I couldn't help but greatly admire. The first chapter alone made me almost cry on the subway. Twice. After spending literal weeks thinking about it, I've boiled down the intellectual change this book forced me to take.50 years ago if you asked an American, "How do you feel about black people?" You would have gotten a lot of sweeping generalizations. Martin Luther King, Jr. taught us that the only correct answer is, "It depends on the black person." Two months ago if you asked me how I felt about religious people I would have said, "A few are alright, but I think they're a little nuts." I now appreciate that the only correct answer is, "It depends on the religious person."In fact, let's talk about religion being the opiate of the masses. How do you feel about amphetamine addicts? Well, in theory, it seems like a bad idea. But Erdosh, a hugely important titan of mathematics, was only capable of being the brilliant man he was while he was on amphetamines. I wonder if a lot of titans of social justice are only capable of doing what they do because of their religious beliefs.
