I was very pleased with the outcome of this book, not because it ended on a positive note for the main characters, but because it really took its time in reaching that point. Ravi and Joe weren't the closest of friends along the way and they didn't really team up to take down the bully like some cheesy 1980s children's movie. They simply came to their own realizations about each other and the other people in their lives in their own way and in their own time. I also liked that the adults in this book weren't the useless side characters they are often portrayed as in children's literature. They weren't perfect, but they were reliable and competent adults.Ravi comes a long way from where he was in the beginning, and Joe discovers that it is possible to stick up for himself without fundamentally changing who he is. I gained a whole new level of respect for Joe when he stood up to his father, and I felt a nervous agony as I read through Ravi's acclimation struggles, particularly those relating Dillon. I'd say that Dillon was the most one-dimensional character in the whole book, the classic unredeemable villain. All around him though, characters showed depth and wavering loyalties. Even his followers were only loyal to a certain extant.In summation, two fully realized main characters and a satisfying plot tells me this book was a winner. Worth the read!

Funny, profound and filled with invaluable lessons about bullying, friendship, individuality, family and fitting in, Save Me a Seat is one of the best children's books I have discovered. The characters and their conflicts ring true. The story is told from three different children's perspective making this a brilliant book about perspectives. Children will have fun reading this book. They will learn about empathy and discover life lessons about accepting other people's cultures as they sharpen their comparative skills. Hoping for more collaborations between these two authors.

Save Me a Seat left me with a lot to think about when it comes to kids dealing with cultural differences, loneliness, bullying, and friendship. During the first week of school Ravi and Joe discover that all is not as it seems, whether you are the new kid in school or your friends from last year have moved away. Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan have teamed up to write a book that is much needed during this current political climate, while also being a fun read!

Great book! I didn't like Joe's attitude toward his mom--I don't believe parents should bow down to their kids--but the story over all was great! I couldn't stop reading it, and got it done in a few hours.There are a few words I wouldn't want my kids to say--like "heck"--but none of the really bad ones.The cover is very attractive, too.

Excellent book for teaching how to deal with bullying and how to make new friends. Best of all it is multicultural literature. Grades levels 6 - 8

I had to read this out loud over a span of a week to my 3rd grader, but she LOVED this book. Teaches about different cultures, bullies, family, and friendship. Very well-written and easy to understand.Brilliant, actually.

This book shows diversity in a whole new way. I would recommend this book to 3-6 graders and it shows that there is "more than meets the eye" Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan has written another great children's book.

We gave this book to our grandson (age 7 1/2) and both he and his mother loved it. It was recommended in Time magazine, and I commend them and Amazon for recommending it!
