It's a great book if you want to the basics of Julia and apply it to optimization, but that's all there is in this book. Like the author mentions in the preface, this is book for someone unfamiliar with programming languages. If you are familiar with any other language, this is not recommended. The first three chapters are devoted to the Julia programming basic, and it does a pretty good job. However, it only goes the necessities to support the later chapters, which just writing and solve optimization problems(LP/IP/MILP/NLP). This is just the prescriptive methods of OR, there's nothing on the predictive or descriptive sides of OR. This book should have been titled Julia Programming for Optimization.
The book is exactly the book information. It is a book that grew from his need to help his students, and I bought the book in order to evaluate whether my students would benefit from using Julia.My conclusion is that the book is helpful and it nicely covers a niche. The reader is not going to learn to program using the book, but if you know how to program it will show you enough Julia to use it. The reader is not going to learn OR either, but if you are know about the algorithms that the book covers, it will give you a good start. If your students know how to program and have a decent knowledge of OR, this book will help them.My main concerns that drives me from a five-star rating follow: (1) the book contains typos (I am no native english speaker and found a couple of them); (2) explanations become terser as the book advances (with the exception of the lagrangean relaxation section which is really good) and (3) it fails to include a section about the use of callbacks from IP solvers. That is the feature that led me to learn JuMP/Julia and, IMHO, the main improvement that the environment provides when compared to some alternatives (like AMPL). I suppose the selection of topics follows his main interests, which is fine, but fails to cover a very important topics.Overall, I would recommend the book to my colleagues.
This book tells me the procedure about writting the code step by step. The fundamental concept and background knowledge about linear programming and operation research are also introduced. I strongly recommend this book to the researchers who may use LP&OR methods.
Easy to follow. Practical and relevant examples.
Very helpful for students in operations research and engineers that have to learn computing with Julia
