Look, I don't cook. At BEST I sometimes take the "oven reheat" option on frozen meals. But I bought and enjoyed this book because:1. Food Porn: The stuff in here all looks disturbingly delicious. Sometimes I don't want to like what I'm seeing but I like it anyway.2. Humor: This book is funny. You'll laugh and look at food and then laugh some more and then order-in because you don't cook and it'll be a great Friday night I swear.3. The Author is Totally Not Fat: Seriously--he's looking good. Seeing someone who cooks this stuff not just get perpetually fatter until he can't get out of bed anymore made me feel good about myself. "Maybe there's hope for me one day" you might say after reading this book. How many books have really given you hope?Rebellions are built on hope.Honestly I never got the hype around Rogue One. It somehow manages to reach into the future movies (The original trilogy) and make them WORSE. Seriously. Isn't that the one thing a prequel shouldn't do? Now we know that Leia's "I'm on a diplomatic mission" line was pretty feeble huh?Buy this book though it's better than Rogue One.
"When I talk about chugging beers and drunk cooking in the middle of parties and making obscene foods that most rational people would consider Abominations of God, it's important that you know it's not for shock or effect or novelty. In no superficial way these are the happiest most important moments of my life."Yeah I used his own words to review his book, but I mean, it's a pretty perfect summation. It's bro-y in the best way. It's hilarious. It's passionate. It's genuine. And a goddamnit it's nostalgic.I've never felt this strongly about a cookbook. 5 stars.
This book is the perfect storm: beer, pork products, nostalgia, and heart. I don't know what I was expecting from a Culinary Bro-Down book, but I found myself engaged by the author's voice. Not only do the recipes induce food babies, but I could tell that this book was the author's food baby---conceived during raucous parties with great friends, with a sprinkle of his original take on food. He manages to bring humor and food together into a surprisingly refined, greased-up-fever-dream collection of stories and recipes. I can't wait to try out every recipe with friends (and light beer)!
Josh Sherer is a mad genius. His recipes are concoctions one would never think to put together, but somehow they work! Also the dude is funny! I first became aware of Josh from his segments on Good Mythical Morning, where he makes recently expensive versions of popular food items(ie; Big Mac, Chic-fil-a sandwich, etc) and when I found out he wrote a cookbook, I had to get it. I'm glad I did..it's a treat, plus I wanted to do my part toward feeding Josh's cats.
People often describe one cookbook or another as reading like an engaging piece of literature. Mostly, those people are lying. But it's true about this cookbook. It is a work of comic literature and one can just sit down and happily read it from beginning to end. It will make you smile for sure and you may laugh out loud. I recommend buying it even if you do not have a kitchen or a hot plate and take all your meals out. But if you do have a kitchen, and a working mouth, I have two words for you: Cheeseburger Pudding (page 34).You can thank me later.
So, I thought if this Josh guy can come up with the most unimaginable concoctions on Good Mythical Morning, then this cookbook has to be interesting. Within the first couple of pages I was laughing so hard that I couldn't stop! Awesome book. I'm definitely going to share it with my friends!
I laughed, I cried, I woke up in a stranger's bed. But now I'm home, brogurt parfait in hand, the horns of "2am" blasting through my Amazon echo against Alexa's best wishes. A fantastic cookbook full of recipes that take the guilty out of "guilty pleasure". But the honest writing and quality photography make the reading experience seem more like Scherer is right there with you in the kitchen, telling you when exactly to turn that steak 90 degrees as he turns his how now-empty can of Natty Light upside down over his head to remind you that he is the alpha male.
This may well be the best cookbook ever. It's definitely the best cookbook that will make you laugh and actually have you fully engrossed in the stories. Amazing off the wall recipes that really make you want to create something you haven't tried before. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to try some recipes that challenge the norm, or just read some dope stories and look at delicious pictures that will make you hungry.
