If you are not into new PC, watered-down translations, then this is *THE* definitive translation to get!
If you have an interest in Norse mythology, and don't mind a tough read, this book is great. I am not a lit or mythology major but I have really enjoyed reading through this. It's easier if you read through the Prose Edda first to get your bearings.
I don't know any other translations, but I can't imagine that any would top this one in my eyes. I love how Hollander has tried to stay so faithful to the poetics of the original. He really makes one feel as if they're reading Old Norse poetry, with all the alliteration, poetic word order, and the sometimes obscure and overtly Germanic words that he opts for (presumably English cognates to the original Norse word which have declined in use). I love it!
I can't speak to the calibre of the translation, but as a neophyte coming to the Poetic Edda, it was mostly clear and very entertaining. I did download another translation for times when I got stuck, of which there were a few, but I can totally understand why this translation is the standard one in use scholastically. I'm not a fan of stories told in poetry, but in this case it not only didn't detract from the reading, but absolutely enhanced it. I did need to keep a cheat sheet handy for some of it though. Still, well done.
Hollander's translation feels needlessly archaic, speaking with a Romantic Victorian accent. I had been using the 1936 Henry Adams Bellows translation of the Poetic Edda available on sacred-texts.com, and thought I should try one that was more recent. I've ended up much preferring the Bellows; it feels less contrived.Your mileage may vary. To a lot of people "Romantic Victorian" is how Ye Olde Times ought to sound, so this will suit them down to the ground. I can't speak to the accuracy of either translation.
This book is the holy grail of Norse literature. I have not put it down since I received it. Though the wording can sometimes be confusing, that is expected with translated texts of this age. Legendary stories of gods and heroes will keep you enthralled through the entire course of the book. I definitely suggest buying this.
This is my favorite book of all time, it is extremely well written, and the translations from Germanic, Norse, and Icelandic are superb from a linguistic standpoint. The stories are ordered properly, and show great detail, always better to read it in the old languages, but this is by FAR the NEXT BEST THING!!!
What the Vedas are for India. Spiritually moving. Filled with vibrant word play and wisdom. If you are a Lit Buff, you should enjoy this well respected work. Make sure to study the intro first. If you are a Heathen, you might come to see as the closest thing you'll come to a holy text forged from the haunted halls of your ancient fore bears. Wisdom that survived as best as can be expected for you to later discover. I recommend everyone take their time while studying this book..you can only benefit from the wisdom it contains. You'll not get that from rush reading. While many people lament that Hollander's translation feels "archaic" in nature, it's really more like "true to form" and a labor of love.
