About the Author
Margarita Engle is the national Young People’s Poet Laureate, and the first Latino to receive that honor. She is the Cuban-American author of many verse novels, including The Surrender Tree, a Newbery Honor winner, and The Lightning Dreamer, a PEN Literary Award for Young Adult Literature winner. Her verse memoir, Enchanted Air, received the Pura Belpré Award, a Walter Dean Myers Award Honor, and was a finalist for the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction, among others. Her picture book Drum Dream Girl received the Charlotte Zolotow Award. Margarita was born in Los Angeles, but developed a deep attachment to her mother’s homeland during childhood summers with relatives. She continues to visit Cuba as often as she can. Terrific motivation book to encourage young girls to seek out fields in aviation or just seek out what makes them happy. Great illustrations.
I never heard of Aida de Acosta before. After reading this book, I went online to learn more. I love the can-do message in this book as Aida goes against the grain.
A wonderful biography for young readers about a woman who was the first woman to fly.
This is a beautifully written and illustrated story about Aida de Acosta, a young girl who yearns to fly. While walking through Paris one day, she sees an airship flying above the crowd. When the inventor asks if she would like a ride, she says, "I would like to be the pilot." I really enjoyed the fun, colorful ride through the countryside as Aida learns to fly. The illustrations are beautiful and will help children imagine life in the early 1900's and her historic flight, nearly six months before the Wright Brothers flew an airplane. Why haven't we heard this story before? In the author's notes there is a short biography and we find out that when her picture was published in the newspaper, and her father learns of her adventures, he demands she never speak of it again. She promised him that she would not pursue her interest in flying. So disappointing that she was kept from her aspirations. Later in life she donates her papers and documents to a museum and her story comes to light. Great for boys and girls ages 4-8, or anyone who wants to learn about women pioneers in history.
Another magnificent book by Margarita Engle. The Flying Girl is lyrically told and so inspiring. A great tale to share with girls and boys alike to encourage them to follow their dreams and reach for the sky.
